Pool Rack Turned DIY Baby Mobile

DIY Baby Mobile

Based on that title you’re probably wondering how this DIY project is even possible. But yes, I did make a baby mobile from a pool ball rack. Come see how!

This project is part of the 3rd #SwapitLikeitsHot where bloggers send each other thrift store finds to make over and we get to tell you all about what we sent, what we got, and how we made something fabulous from someone else’s donations.

How about that to get your creative juices flowing?

Before I get to the mobile, here was my stash. A couple farmers market baskets, a roll of yellow streamers (love the color), a table runner, and a piece of leather. They were great finds from Tania at Run to Radiance.

Swap it Like it's Hot

I spent weeks staring at the items and while I do have plans to use some of the other finds soon, the pool ball rack holder had the most potential.  I immediately knew I could use it as a frame of sorts and since I’d been wanting to make one for Cora’s room, I grabbed my gold paper and got to work.

Here is how to create a DIY baby mobile from a pool ball rack.

Supplies

  • Pool ball rack
  • Primer and paint
  • Various types of ribbon
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Cup hooks
  • Chain (gold chain is from Home Depot)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Larger piece of chain or loop
  • Wall anchor and cup hook

Instructions

First I sanded down the rack. It had a large sticker on the side and Goo Gone was no help, so I took the sander to it to help the paint adhere. Give it a quick coat of primer and white paint. After it is dry, drill pilot holes into the frame and insert the cup hooks. Attach equal lengths of chain to all three corners and gather them together and onto the large piece of chain loop. Add your hanging chain to that and you’re all set preparing the rack to be hung.

Then comes the fun part. I decided to use some ribbon from my stash to hang from the frame. I thought this would be fun for Cora to look at in her crib. Of course I had plenty of gold and white ribbon on hand so I hung it in different lengths. You could use all the same color or type. The possibilities are endless, that’s what’s so fun about making over items from the thrift store.

We used an anchor and cup hook in the ceiling to hang this. The best part about that is that we can take it down when we don’t want it there any longer, or change it out too.
