Making a Table | After

A few weeks ago I showed the before and during adventures of making a custom side table for my bedroom.  It's not every day I custom redo furniture, so this piece has particular meaning for me.   It was the first piece I "reconstructed" as opposed to just painted.  A friend of mine was nice enough to give the table to me (and do most of the carpentry work), I only did the sanding and painting, but it's a great paint job :-)

Here is what the table looked like before.  Beat up, used and abused, it needed a lot of TLC.

After ripping it apart (ok not ripping, prying with the crowbar and whacking it with the hammer) here is a during shot after we reassembled it to be more narrow.  These baskets are what the new table was designed around.

After that there was a lot of sanding, using the planer, the random orbital (which I love) and plain old sand paper.  I painted the legs an enamel black, and conditioned the top oak pieces and sealed them with poly.  After adding the shelf and putting it back together it was finally done.

It went a long way from the beat up work table it was before.  I love the way the oak top came out.  When I was sanding it I wasn't sure if I was going to stain it and as soon as I put on the wood conditioner I knew I was just going to poly it and that was all.  It was such a nice color oak.  The dents and dings give it authentic character.  There were actually coffee stains that I sanded out.

The shelf came out nicely.  It is a salvaged piece of pine from a local reuse warehouse, so I didn't feel bad painting it (I don't think I could paint oak).  The baskets are used to store CDs, hats and gloves and purses below.

The baskets and metal storage container on the shelf are from Ikea, the lamp is from Garage Sale Sunday and the painting is homemade compliments of my man when we were artistic together at creative time, the painting version.  I still might hang it and something else on the wall to complete the look, I only placed it there a short while ago, so I'm still deciding.  What do you think?

I'll have to show photos of it in the context of the room soon, I haven't yet done a bedroom tour.  I love the way it came out, it's prefect for the space and very functional.
