Media Storage

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

I was talking to a friend today (Hi Blotch) whose house we are soon going to work on and she was telling me about her clutter challenges. This is a common situation, being organized. Many people are not happy with their home, they are always looking to make it cleaner, better, less cluttered, newer, etc. Regardless if you have 3 kids or 5 roommates, you can live in a clean, clutter free, environment.

With that, I thought I'd share some of my organization habits. First we'll begin with media.

This is a table in my bedroom. A friend of mine gave it to me and helped rebuild it (I'll have to post that story soon). I wanted a piece of furniture like this so I could have a place for the baskets I use to store items. I love the BRANAS basket line from IKEA, they are versatile, classic and inexpensive.

In the baskets on the floor are hats and gloves in the winter, and tank tops and shorts in the summer. On the other are purses. What happens if your purses don't fit in here you ask? My rule is always not to make the storage container bigger, but reduce the amount of stuff to fit. I got rid of 4 purses on Freecycle this winter in a clean out.

The medal container is also from IKEA and hold all of my jewelry. The black CD holder on the right holds home made CDs.

In the middle basket on the shelf (which was designed to fit that very basket) are my CDs. Yes I do have more than what fits into this basket, but when I moved in last year I got rid of half of my CD collection while unpacking. Most I burned a song or two from onto my laptop and others I just put in the outbox easily knowing I don't even listen to them.

This is a storage set up in my living room. I got these cubes at K-Mart about 7 years ago. They are not quality so much, but they are versatile and work for now.

In the drawers I keep my DVDs. I don't have a TV in this room, so I only go there to get one when I need it, which is a good option. If you don't have the room to store your media immediately near to your TVs, or computer, think about putting it someplace else.

This is where my TV is, in the extra room/office. The basket on the shelf of the TV stand is where I keep VHS tapes. I know! I still have some, but only about 10 because my TV has a built in VCR. Very retro!

The basket on the right with the handle is where I keep magazines I want to read. It keeps them all contained in one place so I know where to go when I want one. Plus it looks organized.

Let me know how you organize your media. Do you have it all in one place, in a closet, open on a bookshelf? Please share your storage secrets!

I have two drawers in a dresser in the guest bedroom full of movies that wont fit in our entertainment center or movie tower. Sorry, guests, you gotta use the bottom two drawers! :)
